The merger of several former Technical Colleges resulted in the formation of Ikhala TVET College on April 1, 2002. Around 1400 people attend the school, with the majority being from the Eastern Cape. Ikhala has campuses in the Northern Region of the Eastern Cape Province (Aliwal North Campus, Ezibeleni Campus, Queen Nonesi Campus, Queenstown Campus, and Sterkspruit Campus).

The NSFAS is a platform for students who need financial assistance and are studying at a Tvet College such as the Ikhala TVET College and are coming from families that have an income of R350,000 or less.
