International Students are welcome to apply for a PhD Scholarship in the Department of Communication and Culture at the BI Norwegian Business School in 2023. The scholarship allows students to enroll in PhD-level programs at BI Norwegian Business School in the areas of marketing, leadership and organization, strategy, and entrepreneurship. Oslo, Norway is where the BI Norwegian Business School is situated. The BI Norwegian School’s Department of Communication and Culture is offering two four-year PhD opportunities. A PhD scholarship, which is partially supported, is also available to international students who want to pursue academic careers abroad and who can make contributions to the global community through publications and research. candidates with a solid background in the social sciences or business who also have a great passion for research and communication

Scholarship Benefits
  • PhD Scholarship is an amazing opportunity for international students who are willing to take their research skills to next level. The four-year scholarship currently pays NOK 523.000,- annually.
  •  The scholarships require 25% of the teaching responsibilities of a full-time tenured position. Ph.D. candidates will have their place of work at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway.
  • The Department of Communication and Culture, where the candidate will be based, is currently home to about 52 faculty.
  • The Department is highly international in its faculty composition as well as its ongoing research and industry collaborations.
  • The department hosts research groups within Internet and Society, Corporate Communication, Creative Industries and Education.
  • Ongoing research in the department is for instance concerned with online organizing and communities, the roles of communication technologies in shaping digital work and work culture, social legitimacy of technological transformations, the role of the arts in the digital transformation, the structural changes of the creative industries, and innovation in education management.
  • BI Norwegian Business School is looking for candidates who want to contribute to one of these research streams, or more broadly to the field of communication research.
  • The members of the department regularly publish on such issues in the field’s top journals, including among others New Media & Society, Information, Communication & Society, Journal of Management Information Systems, Technology in Society, Science and Engineering Ethics, Big Data & Society, the Information Society, Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies, Business Ethics Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society, Computers in Human Behavior, Telematics and Informatics, and the International Journal of Information Management.
Eligible Nationalities
  • This scholarship is open to international students.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Eligible applicants must have completed a Master of Science degree with thesis work, research masters/M.Phil. degree, or a comparable degree relevant for research in communication science by the early autumn of 2023, with a grade point average of B or higher.
  • Final year Master of Science students are also encouraged to apply.
  • An MBA degree does not fulfill the requirements for admission. Accepted applicants will be offered close supervision by experienced scholars and follow-up by the other scholars at the department.

Include the following in your application by uploading it:

  • Certificate of a Master of Science degree or equivalent, please include transcripts of grades
  • Certificate of a Bachelor’s degree, please include transcripts of grades
  • A Diploma Supplement or a similar document describing in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree
  • Other relevant certificates and transcripts
  • A project proposal (5-10 pages including topic, proposed method, schedule) and a tentative list of courses
  • CV
  • Letters of recommendations from relevant employers/tutors providing evidence of your skills as a researcher (a minimum of 2 letters) or the names, titles and institution they work. As they may forward their letters to phd.communication@bi.no by the application deadline.
  • A complete list of all publications and/or other documented relevant activities
  • Certificates from previously completed courses at the doctoral level, if requesting approval of these for the Ph.D. programme at BI Norwegian Business School
Important Notice

  • Additionally, keep in mind that any documents sent after the application deadline won’t be taken into account.
  • Only students who are finishing their master’s degree in 2023 and do not have a final certificate at the time of application will be granted an exception.
  • Please be aware that once you’ve submitted your application, you cannot change it.
